Our Approach
Our approach to sustainability
Reliable energy infrastructure has to work for more than today. It must protect people, withstand disruption, use resources responsibly and remain valuable as the energy landscape changes.
At KPC, sustainability means five things:
- Protect people. Safety comes first.
- Protect the network. Resilient infrastructure protects customers and the economy.
- Protect nature. We reduce emissions, prevent pollution and restore ecosystems.
- Strengthen communities. Our presence should create opportunity, not simply infrastructure.
- Prepare for tomorrow. We are improving efficiency and investing for a changing energy landscape.

Materiality assessment
How we determine what matters
Our materiality assessment identifies the sustainability issues most significant to stakeholders and to KPC's long-term resilience. We consider both our impacts on people and the environment and the financial effects of sustainability-related risks and opportunities on the business.
The results inform strategy, enterprise risk management, targets, capital planning, stakeholder engagement and reporting. We review the topics as our business, stakeholder expectations and the external operating environment evolve.
Our ten material topics
Climate Change, GHG Emissions & Energy Transition
Emissions, energy use, climate resilience and transition risk reflect both regulatory expectations under Kenya's NDC 3.0 and our pipeline infrastructure's direct exposure to a changing climate, managed through our GHG inventory, decarbonisation roadmap and Energy Transition Framework.
Asset Integrity, Pipeline & Terminal Safety
Ranked among our highest-priority topics by both stakeholders and management, reflecting the consequences of pipeline failure for communities, the economy and our licence to operate. Our integrated asset integrity and process safety programme is our primary response.
Spills, Leaks & Local Environmental Impacts
Preventing loss of containment and managing its consequences for soil, water and air is consistently flagged by communities and regulators. This is managed through leak detection, engineered containment, rapid response and site remediation.
Occupational Health, Safety & Wellbeing
Protecting our workforce and contractors from injury and occupational illness, managed through our Safety-first culture, proactive safety prevention programs, medical surveillance and wellness programs, and incident investigation systems.
Water, Effluent & Waste Management
Stakeholders rank water, effluent and waste management among our highest-priority topics. We respond through efficient water use, oil-water separators, effluent-quality monitoring and a waste hierarchy that prioritises prevention, reuse and recycling.
Biodiversity & Ecosystem Protection
Our pipeline corridor crosses diverse and, in places, sensitive ecosystems. Protection through right-of-way management, erosion control and site rehabilitation reflects our responsibility to the landscapes our infrastructure passes through.
Local Communities, Land & Resource Rights
Wayleave management, land access, compensation and community relations are consistently prioritised by communities and county governments and are intrinsic to our social licence to operate.
Economic Contribution & Service Reliability
Our role in national energy security and economic development, and our reliability as a service provider, is among our highest-impact material topics from a business perspective.
Employment Practices, Labour & Human Rights
Workforce wellbeing, fair employment, diversity and inclusion, and respect for labour and human rights are material both to our people and to our reputation as a responsible, listed employer.
Ethics, Anti-Corruption & Regulatory Compliance
Transparency, ethical conduct and regulatory compliance are material because KPC operates under significant public and capital-markets scrutiny. We manage these priorities through our integrity programme, whistleblowing channels, internal controls and Board-level oversight.
Net Zero & Energy Transition Roadmap
The road ahead
The energy ecosystem is changing. So is KPC. We are improving energy efficiency, expanding renewable energy, strengthening climate resilience and exploring opportunities emerging from the transition to cleaner energy.
- 2025/26Baseline
Establish the foundation
GHG inventory finalised; SCADA-based energy monitoring; ESG governance structures embedded
- 2026/27Data & Efficiency
Strengthen measurement
Energy efficiency upgrades at pump stations; LED retrofits; improved Scope 3 data quality across supplier base
- 2027/28Acceleration
Scale up renewables
Progressive solarisation of pumping stations; SAF, ethanol-blending and hydrogen feasibility studies; external limited assurance on Scope 1 & 2
- 2030NDC Milestone
Deliver interim targets
29% cut in Scope 1+2 emissions; 17.5% cut in material Scope 3 categories; SBTi-aligned targets validated
- 2050Net Zero
Complete the transition
At least 90% absolute reduction in operational emissions; high-integrity offsets applied only to unavoidable residual emissions
Our goal is not simply to reduce our footprint. It is to build a stronger, more resilient energy network that continues to serve customers and the economy as the future evolves.
Our commitment to the next reporting cycle
In the next reporting cycle, KPC will strengthen data collection across operational sites, improve the quality and consistency of waste, water and workforce data, formalise Board oversight of climate-related risks and opportunities, and embed more consistent ESG performance reviews across the business.
We will report progress against these commitments, explain material variances and update our priorities as evidence, stakeholder expectations and the operating environment evolve. This is how we will build trust and demonstrate measurable progress over time.
